Why is There a Martin Luther King Day?

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Today is Martin Luther King Day, a national holiday set aside to honor the slain civil rights leader.

There is no doubt that Dr. King was an important person for all Black Americans.  His “I have a dream” speech is well-known to virtually all Americans.

But I have to wonder, why does he deserve a national holiday, when other great Americans don’t?  We used to have Washington’s birthday, and Lincoln’s birthday, arguably two of our greatest presidents.  Those holidays are a thing of the past. Now we have Presidents Day, which is dedicated to all of our past presidents.

You can’t convince me that King was more important to our country than Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Adams, etc.  To me,  this is just one more instance of Political Correctness.  Yes, King gave his life for civil rights, but so did Lincoln.

In New Hampshire, where I live, this holiday used to be called Civil Rights Day.  In a like manner to President’s day, it honored ALL the people who contributed to the cause of equal rights for all Americans.   But because of pressure from the liberal media, and the PC zealots, the government threatened to take away highway funding if the name of the holiday was not changed to MLK day.

So instead of honoring all civil rights activists, we have Martin Luther King day.  To me, this is the wrong message to send.  It’s time to reconsider whether King deserves his own holiday. In my opinion, the answer is a resounding “No”.
