What is a Patriot?
Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Here is a quote from Doug Davis’ Blog, http://teapartyhandbook.blogspot.com. He attributes it to the 912 Coalition (this could not be checked, no source was cited):
Just what is a “Patriot” anyway? While there may be a few different definitions used by others to define the term “patriot“… ours is very simple:
Patriot = “A person who regards himself or herself as a defender, esp. of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.”
This illustrates one of the basic problems our country is faced with today – a number of Americans, notably those that consider themselves members of the Tea Party Movement, define themselves not by what they are, but what they are against. This truly validates the description of them as “the party of NO”.
I find it absolutely unbelievable that anyone can define the word “patriot” without mentioning the country, or its people. Unfortunately, it’s very believable that the Teabaggers are behind this statement.
This group of people has it in its mind that principles are more important than people. They define themselves as being anti-government. How can you love a country but be against all aspects of the government? To me, that defines a anarchist, not a patriot.
Don’t get me wrong, the state of the government is dismal. But the goal should be to fix it, not ignore it. I mean, lets face it – if you hate something, you’re not going to work too hard to fix it.
