Unions Have Outlived Their Usefulness

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

There was a time in this county’s history when Trade Unions were important.  Those days are long gone.  Unions nowadays are simply excuses for incompetent workers to get big paychecks and benefits, and dishonest union officials to skim money.

I know alot of people who, after reading these words, will be really pissed off.  There are too many union members who feel a sense of entitlement because they’re part of a union.

Take, for example, the Auto Workers.  In the face of a possible total failure of their industry, they absolutely refuse to even consider a pay cut, even though they are a major reason for the state of their industry.  Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.  Can you imagine guaranteeing a laid off worker 95% of their salary to sit on their ass?  That’s happening today with the UAW.

The main problem with unions is that they don’t judge people by the quality of their work. Instead,  seniority is the sole criteria in decisions with union workers.  Why do you think American children score so low compared to other countries?  Because imcompetent teachers can’t be fired.  Once they have tenure,  it takes an act of god to get them out.  Yet they get paid more than younger teachers who are more effective.

For those of you that have seen the HBO show The Sopranos,  where they showed a bunch of guys sitting around every day on the construction site, while others worked around them – that’s not fiction.  It happens every day.  The mob runs most unions, and therein lies their power.

Case in point: in the 1970′s I worked in the trucking industry in new Jersey, and of course was a member of the Teamsters.  One of my friends decided that he wanted to run for Shop Steward.  Well, one day he got a visit at his home from a couple of goons, who assured him that running for Shop Steward was a really bad idea if he wanted his family to be safe.  That is a true story.

And can you believe that professional sports players have unions?  Why the hell do people making millions of dollars a year need a labor union?  Come on.

Today I saw a news story about a glass company that went out of business.  So they laid off all their workers with 3 days notice.  The workers refused to go home, and as of now have taken over the building, saying the situation is ‘unacceptable”.  Welcome to the real world, people.  When the company goes broke, the workers lose their job.  It’s happend to me twice in my professional career as a compter programmer.  What the hell makes them think they’re special?

Time to wake up, America.  The days when labor unions were needed is over.  Let’s judge people on the quality of their work, not the amount of time they have on the job.
