The Yankees Blow it – again

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Last Sunday, the Yankees played their last game in Yankee Stadium.  Next season, they’ll be playing across the street in a new park.

So it’s natural that they honor all the Yankees greats in their pre-game ceremony.

The problem is, that they didn’t include ALL the great Yankees.   Probably the most shocking was the fact that Joe Torre was not mentioned.  This is a guy who took the Yankees to the playoffs every year, and led them to four world championships.

The reason he wasn’t included?  He had the audacity to thumb his nose at his new proposed contract, which included a pay cut.  The Yankees ownership couldn’t believe that anyone would turn them down,  and acted like a spoiled 10 year old when they didn’t get their way.

But Joe gets the last laugh.  He goes to the playoffs again, while the Yankees and the new manager, Joe Girardi, will be watching from home.  How appropriate.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m happy that Torre is no longer the Yankee skipper.  I’m a Red Sox fan, and I love it when then Yankees make themselves weaker, which is certainly the case today.  They let one of the best managers in baseball get away because of a few bucks.

Brian Cashman’s contract is up for renewal this year.  He’s a great general manager.  Unfortunately for him, the Yankees owners really don’t want  a general manager.  They want a figurehead who makes no decisions, but just does what they tell him.  This is good for the rest of the AL, since hopefully they’ll treat him in a manner similar to how they treated Torre, and he’ll end up with another team.

There was a time when the Yankees were the premier organization in the MLB.  Now they’re just a joke.
