State of the Country

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

As the end of 2010 is just a couple of days away,  it’s a good time to take a look at the state of things in the USA, and to try to predict which way the country is headed.

It’s popular for the flag-waving Paper Patriots to say that “This is the greatest country in the world”.  There was a time when that was true,  but sadly,  the USA is not the greatest in very many categories at all.

Our political system is in shambles, and our government is crippled by the attitudes of the far-left and far-right.  We have a large portion of the country who think that our President is a socialist, or even Communist, Muslim who was born in another country and has pulled off the greatest sham in the history of the USA by getting elected president.   These people are led by an alcoholic,  borderline schizophrenic, TV commentator/religious leader who fills their minds with imagined conspiracies to bring down the USA in favor of a New World Order based on socialism.

The two party system has outlived its usefulness,  with each party refusing the vote for legislation proposed by the other party, regardless of how it would help the country.  It has become the goal of politicians to win a political victory over the other party, not to make things better for Americans.  As January looms and we have the new GOP Congress with the Teabaggers demanding no compromises,  we’ll see a lot of stalled legislation, resulting in the 2012 election going to the Dems in a landslide, and the Tea Party going the way of the Know Nothing Party of the 1860′s.

While the rest of the world embraces rationality in favor of myths,  much of the USA still clings to the silly notions presented in the Bible.  It doesn’t go unnoticed that the majority of the people subscribing to those beliefs are the same ones who are going to the Tea Party rallies,  and will be happy to tell you that this is a Christian nation, despite the reality of history.

All in all, things aren’t looking too good right now, and the forseeable future does not look any better, as far as I can see.
