Offended by the term “Teabagger”?

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

If you’ve been involved in a political discussion with a Teabagger, and you use the term “Teabagger”, no doubt you’ve heard their canned response “The fact that you are referring to me using a sexual act offends me”.    The reason behind this is that they are still trying to recover from their own choice of terms to describe themselves.

When they decided to mail teabags to their elected representatives to show their dissatisfaction,   they used the term Teabag as a verb.  And they themselves invented the word “Teabagger”, complete with appropriate apparel,  bumper stickers, buttons, etc.

People dressed as teabags, or attached teabags to their clothes,  and gathered to protest taxes.  A woman actually carried a sign “I’m Teabagging for Jesus”.

Then they found out that the verb “Teabag” was already in use,  and its established meaning (an oral sexual act) wasn’t exactly in line with their philosophy.  So they tried to distance themselves from the name, actually blaming the media for selection of the term.  Thus began the “the name offends me” campaign.

Actually, I use the word all the time.  But I never think of a sexual act when I do.   Let’s face it, – the people who engage in the sexual act of teabagging have never been called Teabaggers.   We don’t describe people that engage in sexual acts in that manner.  We don’t use terms like “blowjobber” or “screwer”.  The word “Teabagger” did not exist until the Tea Party invented it.

To me, a Teabagger is a person with a certain right wing extremist political leaning, in the same vein as “liberal”, “lefty”,”neocon”, “libertarian”, etc.  That’s what I mean when I use it.

If it offends you because you associate it with a sexual act,  I’d say  you should get your mind out of the gutter and consider the context in which the word is used.   No, it is not meant as a compliment, but not because of any sexual connotation.
