Ice Storm – December, 2008
Monday, December 15th, 2008
Thursday most of New England experienced a nasty ice storm. Trees, grass, buildings – everything – showed a coating of ice. As pretty as is was, the result was terrible. Tree limbs broke under the weight of the ice, coming down on power lines, buildings, cars, or whatever was beneath them.
Most of the state of New Hampshire lost power because of the downed power lines. As of right now, we still have no power. Well, that’s not exactly true – we do have power, because we have a generator. Others around here are not so lucky. They are suffering in the cold and the dark, and have been for 3 days so far. The power company says it will be possibly 5 more days until everyone’s power is restored.
The number of limbs that have come down on our property is unbelievable. Unfortunately, one of them took out the cable wire. This means we have no TV, Internet, or phone service. Not that it matters all that much right now whether the cable wire is intact or lying on the ground. The cable provider, Comcast, is offline, so even if our wire hadn’t been severed by the falling limb, we still would be in the same boat.
Having an internet based business, this is more than a minor inconvenience. So I went out and signed up for a broadband wireless account with Verizon. So at least I can get on the internet (although there are only a few spots in my house where the signal is strong enough – cell phone reception sucks in my town).
Looking forward to getting back to normal. I just hope it doesn’t take 5 more days.
