I Lost A Good Buddy Today

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Today we said goodbye to our dog Mac. He was a great dog, and very special to Donna. Mac came to us about 13 or 14 years ago. Donna’s better with dates than I am. She’s the record keeper in the family.

He wasn’t all that special to look at, a cross between a Beagle and Lhasa-Apso (and who knows what else). But he sure was special in other ways. He was gentle, yet protective, You always knew he was coming by the sound of his nails on the floors, and his unique gait. He loved to play, even up to the end, even though he was deaf and blind by that time, and had a constant limp.

He was a favorite of Sara the cat, although he just stood there are endured it while she rubbed herself against his body. He was a also favorite of my father in law, Dusty, before he died. So much so that Dusty was buried with a picture of Mac in his hands.

When Mac joined our household, we had six (I think – memory isn’t what it used to be) other dogs already, and 5 or 6 cats. So he had plenty of company all the time he was with us. We’re now down to two dogs – Abbie and Ike. That’s the least we’ve had in about 19 years.

Things are going to be a lot different around the house without Mac. It’ll take some time adjusting. But we’ve been through it before, many times. And unfortunately, we’ll be going through this many more times, because we’ll always have pets around.

So long Mac, my buddy. We’ll miss you.
