A New Low for the New York Yankees
Wednesday, July 16th, 2008
I didn’t think it could happen. But it has. My opinion of Yankees fans has been lowered. At a time when Yankees fans should be celebrating the greatness of their past teams and their revered stadium, they chose to behave in a manner that brings them to a new low in the minds of REAL baseball fans.
I understand that there is a rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox. And I enjoy it immensely (especially since the Red Sox have established themselves as the premier team in Major League Baseball, much to the chagrin of Yankees fans).
However, there is no excuse for threatening the life of Jon Papelbon’s pregnant wife. There is no excuse for cursing the Red Sox players during the All-Star parade, in front of hundreds of children, including the kids of the All Star players.
Ignored by Yankees fans was the fact that that the Yankees All-Star players underperformed in the game. And the Yankees fans apparently didn’t care that their beloved third baseman went hitless, and left the stadium early.
Also ignored was the fact that Red Sox skipper Terry Francona had the integrity to select the Yankees manager for his coaching staff, even though his team stinks, and his managerial efforts in New York so far have been abysmal.
And Yankees fans also ignored Terry’s selfnessness when he substituted for the Yankees players in a manner that would allow the fans to show their appreciation to the players.
And when a Red Sox player was selected as the MVP, they booed through the entire presentation of the award. A total lack of class.
It’s time for “Yankees Universe” to wake up. The Yankees are last century’s story. They’ve had their time in the spotlight, and it’s over. It’s time for teams with REAL fans who love baseball to root their team to the World Championship. Yankees fans are not real baseball fans. They’re assholes.
We’ve come to expect a lack of class from Yankees fans. But this time they went way beyond expectations.
