A Christian Nation? Watch What You Ask For!
Friday, January 20th, 2012
Right wingers are fond of telling us that they want to live in a Christian nation. Which, when you think about it, is rather ironic, considering that practically everything the GOP stands for conflicts with the way of life that Christ taught.
In a Christian nation, there would be no 1%. Christ made it clear that rich people don’t get into heaven (unless you can get a camel through the eye of a needle), and that accumulation of wealth is the wrong road (Sell everything you own and give to the poor).
In fact, Jesus makes it quite clear that caring for the sick and poor are life’s priority. So in a Christian nation, we would have universal health care and social programs to care for the needy.
In a Christian nation, there would be no racism or religious bigotry. Christ extolls his followers to “Love your neighbor as yourself”, and to turn the other cheek when slighted. A Christian nation would also not need much of a military presence.
In a Christian nation, everyone would be truly equal, and people of all races and sexual orientation would be treated with respect.
The truth is, even though I’m a non-believer, I wouldn’t mind living in a Christian nation. But somehow, I think the GOP’s idea of a Christian nation is very different than what Jesus’ idea of a Christian nation would be.
